The Surname Phifer originated in Austria and is a occupational surname for pipe blower in band at ceremonies, also for a whistle blower like the "pide Piper", my surname is spelled Phyfer but was originally Phifer but with time it got misspelled... This is the first time I have read that it could also mean Shy, timid, humble and proud... Our forefathers is normally Austrian Germans... Pieter Hendrik Phyfer
