read moreMollet: What does the surname Mollet mean?
The last name Mollet is of French origin, and can be found mainly in north-western Europe. The name is generally thought to be a diminutive form of the name "Molette", which was derived from the French word molette meaning "small." The name could possibly have originally been an endearing nickname for a small child, or a playful reference to a family member who may have been unusually short in stature. Alternatively, the name could come from the word molete which was used to describe a kind of light infantryman during the medieval period.
It is likely that the Mollet surname is derived from the nickname, rather than the word for infantryman, as records of the name in France date back to the thirteenth century, well before the word molete could have been used in this context.
Today, the name Mollet is still very common in France, and there are also significant numbers of bearers of that name in the United Kingdom, Germany, and the United States. In all of these countries, people who carry this name can trace their roots back to France.

There are large pockets of Mullet s in Holmes County, Ohio. That is where my Mullets settled after leaving Switzerland in 1833. Prior to living in Switzerland, they had fled from France to England. Finding the religious persecution as bad in England as it was in France, they then fled to Switzerland. This information on this website seems to agree with our Mullet family tradition that was handed down. The spelling changed while in Switzerland several times.
