My family name is Curnutte. We were told that my family name was given to us when our Cherokee ancestors were on the trail of tears from the Carolina's. It was told that our great grandmother got sick and was unable to continue to walk. A soldier was in love with her and agreed to stay with her until she was well enough to travel again. The girls family agreed on the condition that they marry. His name was Curnutte but it has been told to me that it meant "French Fur Trapper" I can see how it would have been a French name and the man was an American fur trapper that caused the change of the meaning. One day I would like to go to Oklahoma and find that side of my family.
