Unravelling the Journey of My Surname ‘Crooks’ through iGENEA DNA Test: An Insight into Genetic Ancestry

Family name Crooks

With an aim to delve into my lineage, I took the iGENEA DNA test, hoping to get a clearer understanding of my surname – Crooks. My exploration through the genetic markers and haplogroups gave me an enriched understanding of the historical and geographical adaptations within my lineage.

I recently took the iGENEA DNA test to explore my ancestral background and better understand the heritage associated with my surname - Crooks. The iGENEA test results presented an array of information on my paternal and maternal haplogroups, geographical distribution of these groups, in-depth historical insights, and even probable ethnological characteristics.

The procedure was based on advanced genetic technology, utilizing small samples of saliva to extract DNA data. The DNA evaluation process centred on identifying the Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) that are unique variants in the genome and are useful for determining the ancient lineage and migration patterns of my ancestors. Moreover, the Short Tandem Repeat (STR) analysis provided details of the more recent paternal lineage.

The results from the paternal line gave a greater depth of understanding on my surname - Crooks. I found that belong to the R1b haplogroup, which is predominantly found in Western Europe. It emphasized more on the Anglo-Saxon and Celtic roots of Crooks, illustrating the surname's historical association with occupations like 'shepherd' or 'herdsman'. It reiterated facts that those with the Crooks surname migrated throughout history due to geopolitical disruptions, economic opportunities, or societal changes. Perhaps most intriguingly, it indicated recent ancestral connections in Northern England and Scotland.

The maternal line showed the H haplogroup, which originates in the near East and Central Asia. It gives interesting the perspective of the maternal lineage being more nomadic, showing migrations to Europe during the Ice Age.

It's important to remember that these findings are probabilities rather than definitive statements. However, they provide a solid outline of the history and the migration patterns of those associated with the Crooks surname.

In terms of accuracy, iGENEA, and any DNA test for that matter, can only provide an estimation of ancestry and not completely accurate information. There are several factors that might affect the results, like the genetic diversity of the reference population in the databases, mutations over generations, or testing errors; but those are typically fiscal.

This iGENEA DNA test has truly provided a fascinating deep-dive into the historical and geographical narrative of my ancestors, offering an understanding of the Crooks surname beyond its lexical meaning and origins. I am looking forward to continuing with this quest of genealogical discovery and comparatively exploring the findings provided by other companies.

P. Crooks
